New Building at O’Hara’s: Reception Area & Handicapped-Accessible Washrooms

It’s been in the discussion stage for some time. Now some steps have been taken to make it a reality:

  • the proposal and site have been approved by Quinte Conservation
  • the 20 foot by 30 foot reception/washrooms building will be situated in the trees adjacent to the Lois Wishart bench (at the start of the Lois Wishart nature trail), facing the music stage
  • the exterior of the building will be board and batten construction to blend in with the historic atmosphere of the pioneer homestead
  • the first draft of engineer’s plans has been drawn up and approved by the Quinte Conservation Executive Board.  Final plans will be completed and presented for inspection when the site has been cleared and levelled this fall.
  • a new well has been drilled adjacent to the site
  • arrangements are underway to run a buried power line to the site
  • a $25,000 donation has been received from the John Parrott Foundation, Belleville, to kickstart the project.  Hopefully, construction can start in the Spring of 2009

As more seniors’ groups and school classes visit the O’Hara Mill Homestead, it has become imperative to provide moder, sanitary washroom facilities.  As well, volunteers working the new reception area will be able to see visitors when they arrive on the Homestead grounds, and provide better direction to the various attractions on the site.
