School House Activities

It was a busy year at the school house.  We were pleased with the number of children and adults who visited during the season and on the special activity days at the homestead.

It was gratifying to see the increased number of students who visited during the school year with their teachers.  Besides getting a chance to have a lesson in a log school, the children enjoyed the opportunity to go back in time and write with quill pens using home made ink.  Writing on slates instead of in scribblers was also a novel experience.  We were lucky to have so many volunteers to "teach" in the school.

We have received some wonderful donations to add to our collection.  Thanks to those who donated such items as a portrait of Queen Victoria, slate for blackboards and an 1890′s map of Hastings and Prince Edward Counties.  We are still looking for a large floor model abacus and a chalk holder for drawing music lines.  We all remember those music lessons from our school days, do we not?

The upcoming year should see even more activity at the school as we continue our outreach to schools both in our county and beyond.  Thanks again to all of our volunteers.
