2010 Volunteer Opportunities

Keeping up with the management, preservation and development of the O'Hara Mill Homestead is a sometimes daunting task.  Our voluteers make it all happen and we need more people interested in helping out.  No particular qualifications or time commitments are required aside from a wish to contribute.

Please review the opportunities below.  If you see somewhere you can assist, please do not hesitate to let a contact person know your wishes.  This list is not comprehensive but rather a list of the our more pressing needs.  If you would like to get involved in something not listed here, we still want to hear from you.

Mill Pond Dam Reconstruction Project

Our major project for 2010 is the reconstruction of the Mill Pond Dam.  The project will require a massive volunteer effort so we can use all the volunteer help we can get.

Heritage Gardens

The Heritage Gardeners typically meet on a weekday morning each week to tend the gardens.  This year's meeting schedule is yet to be determined.  If you are interested, we can certainly use your help.

Ecological

One of the projects that has yet to be initiated is a review of the biosphere at O'Hara Mill Homestead.  It is probable that there are things that we do not know, but should, about the biology of this 85 acre site.  If you have expertise related to this type of project, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Curatorial

O'Hara Mill Homestead is a museum and we need more curatorial expertise.  Can you help?

Geological/Hydrogeological

It has been suggested that there may be some unique geological attributes in the 85 acre O'Hara Mill Homestead site.  Whether or not there are, we would still like to characterize the geology of the site.  If you are interested and have expertise, please let us know.

Machine Restoration

Several machines are to be found at the O'Hara Mill Homestead.  These machines need to be assessed with regard to their suitability given the time period represented at the museum and, for those found appropriate, we need to assess with respect to restorability and, ultimately, undertake these restorations.  In most cases, it would be desirable to restore to working condition.  Part of this initiative would be curatorial (see above) and part is actual hands on restoration.

Miscellaneous

Anything you can think of but that is not listed above probably still needs doing.  If you have such interests, just let us know.
